Phong Nha Ke Bang is a mountain town in Quang Binh province. The complex karst formations stretching throughout the surrounding Ke Bang National Park were formed approximately 300 million years ago, making them the oldest in Asia. Part of the cave system, you also hear about Paradise Cave, Tu Lan, or Son Doong is the largest and most beautiful cave in Vietnam.
Phong Nha Ke Bang national park: Kingdom of the cave:
Phong Nha cave – the early discovered cave located in the village of Son Trach, 50 km drive from Dong Hoi Airport, the Ke Bang National Park was designated a Unesco World Heritage site in 2003. Phong Nha Cave is remarkable for its thousands of meters of underground river caves filled with abundant stalactites and stalagmites.
In November and December, Son River is prone to flooding and the underground cave may be closed.
Phong Nha means Cave of the wind and teeth, but, unfortunately, the ‘teeth’ (or stalagmites) that were by the entrance are no longer there. Once you get further into the cave, it’s mostly unspoiled. In 1990 a British expedition explored 35km of the cave and made the first reliable map of the underground (and underwater) passageways. They discovered that the main cavern is nearly 8km long, with 14 other caves nearby.
Tien Son Cave is known as the dry cave on the mountainside just above Phong Nha Cave. You can walk to it from the entrance to Phong Nha Cave (10 minutes) – look for the sign at the foot of the stairs.
In the Vietnam War, Phong Nha Cave was used as a hospital and ammunition depot. The entrance shows evidence of aerial attacks. That warplanes spent considerable time bombing and strafing the Phong Nha area is hardly surprising: this was one of the key entrance points to the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Entrance fees Phong Nha Ke Bang:
The Phong Nha Reception Department, an enormous complex in Son Trach includes a restaurant, boat station, Ticket courter, and coffee shop…. You buy a Phong Nha entrance ticket here and organize a boat to take you to the cave. This is the only way is being used to visit Phong Nha and Tien Son caves.
Boats on Son River seal up to 12 people and of course, they also single ticket for sharing with other travelers. The cave system is electrically lit, but you may want to bring a flashlight.
The actual cave entrance is 3 km by river from Xuan Son boat station. The one-way ride takes about 30 minutes and gives a great glimpse into the life of river people. Overall, it takes about 2 hours to visit the river cave, or about 4 hours with a trip to the dry cave too.

Tra Ang Cave sits as a hidden jewel within the dense greenery of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. While many visitors flock to the famous dry caves, this specific spot offers a raw, unfiltered look at the karst cave system and the vibrant Ma Da Valley trekking routes. This journey isn't just a walk in the woods; it’s an invitation to explore a world of underground river swimming and adventure tourism in Quang Tri (Former is Quang Binh province). By following the trail through the primeval forest, travelers can witness a perfect blend of limestone karst and deep biodiversity. Everything You Need to Know About Exploring Tra Ang Cave We find that Tra Ang Cave stands out because it requires you to get wet and embrace the wild. Unlike the lighted pathways of Thien Duong, Tra Ang Cave features sand beaches at its entrance and a completely dark interior. The cave is a massive limestone karst structure that has stalactite systems hanging from the ceiling like frozen chandeliers. Because Tra Ang Cave is located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang, it falls under the protection of a UNESCO World Heritage site, ensuring the ecosystem remains untouched. We often see that the Ma Da Valley topography is a flat valley, which provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the limestone mountains that surround it. Since vegetation covers Ma Da Valley, the air here is incredibly fresh. We believe the hydrology of the area is fascinating; Tra Ang Cave is connected to underground rivers that keep the water flowing year-round. If you want to see a place where nature reserves meet adrenaline, this is it. The Monkey Bridge Phong Nha has quickly become one of the most talked-about spots for travelers visiting central Vietnam. Tucked away in the serene Bong Lai Valley, this destination offers a refreshing break from the usual cave trekking. Visitors flock here to test their balance on a narrow beam while surrounded by the lush greenery of the Quang Tri countryside (Former is Quang Binh Province). Since the experience is run by a local family, it provides a rare chance to see authentic rural life while participating in a lighthearted physical challenge. Because the site is so close to other famous stops, it serves as a perfect hub for a day of exploration. A Complete Guide to the Monkey Bridge at Cuong Rung Farm We absolutely love how Cuong Rung Farm captures the heart of Vietnamese hospitality. It isn’t just a tourist stop; it is a working farm where Mr. Cuong welcomes every visitor like an old friend. The monkey bridge itself is a creative take on the traditional bamboo bridges once used to cross canals in the Mekong Delta. Here, however, the stakes are a bit wetter! We find that the Bong Lai Valley hosts eco-tourism in a way that feels organic rather than commercialized. You can sit in the farm's small café and watch the mist roll over the jungle-covered mountains. It is a Vietnam rural adventure that pairs perfectly with a broader explore the best of Phong Nha itinerary. Whether you are a solo backpacker or traveling with a group, the energy here is infectious. The Bicycle Bridge Challenge: Rules and Rewards The main event at Monkey Bridge is the bicycle crossing. Getting deep into the heart of the Vietnamese jungle feels like stepping into a different world, especially when the destination is hang Pygmy Cave. Tucked away in the remote corners of the Bố Trạch District, this massive limestone wonder isn't just another hole in the ground. It is officially the world's fourth largest cave, and reaching it requires a serious commitment to Vietnam adventure trekking. As part of the Hang Ho System, also known as the Tiger Cave system, this spot offers a raw, untouched look at the Annamite Range. Exploring the massive dimensions here means facing an 845m arch and a height of 100 meters, making it a bucket-list item for anyone obsessed with adventure tourism Quang Ti. A Deep Dive into the World's Fourth Largest Cave: Hang Pygmy When we talk about scale, Hang Pygmy is truly mind-blowing. The British Cave Research Association (BCRA) did the math and recognized Hang Pygmy as a global giant. To give you a sample of its size, the entrance width measures a staggering 845 meters. Inside, the entrance height reaches 100 meters, making you feel like a tiny ant in a cathedral of rock. The cave's local name, En Ruc Ca Roong, translates to something related to the thousands of swallows that call this place home. Swallows inhabit Hang Pygmy, and watching them dive through the limestone arch at sunset is a sight we absolutely love. Because light penetrates deep into the cave, you won't just see bare rock. Instead, lush green ferns and vibrant green moss grow all over the mouth of the cave. These ferns grow in the cave entrance, creating a hanging garden effect. If you enjoy photography, the contrast between the dark limestone and the bright green plants is a dream. We think the high biodiversity here makes

The rugged landscapes of Quang Tri hide many secrets, but few are as captivating as Cha Loi cave. This site serves as a perfect blend of natural beauty and heroic history, sitting quietly in the heart of Ngan Thuy Commune. Whether looking for a heart-pumping adventure or a deep dive into the past, this "General's Cave" delivers an experience that stays with visitors long after they leave. The journey through the three-level structure offers a unique glimpse into the geological wonders of Vietnam while honoring the legends who once walked these very halls. A Complete Guide to Exploring Cha Loi Cave: Itineraries and Experience Levels When we think about a trip here, we have to decide between two main paths. I like the 1-day Cha Loi Cave tour because it is perfect for a quick but intense burst of nature. It has a starting price of 1,550,000 VND, which is quite reasonable for what you get. On the other hand, I find the 2-day-1-night Cha Loi Cave tour even more rewarding for those who love sleeping under the stars in the Love Valley. We need to talk about the difficulty. The longer expedition is a level 3 challenge. This means you will be rope climbing through narrow passages, wading through underground rivers, and scaling steep rock walls. If you aren't a fan of physical exertion, this might feel tough, but for us adventure junkies, it’s a dream. You can trust some travel agencies like Oxalis Adventure or Netin Travel. They do the exploring tour in cave settings that range from family-friendly walks to "Level 6" extreme expeditions. If you are planning your trip, you might also want to check out some fun activities in the Phong Nha area to round out your Quang Binh vacation. Why it’s Known as "General’s

If you are looking for a break from the dark depths of the local caves, the Duck Stop Phong Nha offers a hilarious and sunny change of pace. Located in the heart of the Bong Lai Tourism Village, this quirky farm has become a must-see for anyone following the Southeast Asian Backpacker Trail. It is not just about the animals; it is about embracing a rural lifestyle tour that combines laughter with local traditions. While most people come to Quang Tri Province for the world-class trekking, they often find that this community-based tourism spot provides the most memorable photos of their entire trip. How to Experience the Famous Duck Massage at The Duck Stop We often think of a spa day as quiet music and scented candles, but here, the primary activity is the chaotic and ticklish duck massage. To start, the staff provide photography services so we can capture the moment we become the Duck Leader. The visitors participate in duck massage by holding a handful of unhusked rice. As a sample of the action, you simply toss the grain, and the tourists feed ducks as they swarm around your feet. The sensation is wild. Because the rice attracts ducks, dozens of beaks start pecking at the grain around your toes. It feels like a thousand tiny vibrations. Don't worry about the mess, though, because the The Duck Stop provides rubber sandals for everyone. This fun farm activity is a great example of how simple things can be the most entertaining. We find that the staff take photos at just the right time, ensuring you have proof of your time as the "Leader of the Ducks." After the frenzy, we can head to the hand-washing area where the facilities include soap and water provided for a quick cleanup. It

Deep within the lush, primeval forests of the Annamite Range lies a subterranean world of staggering proportions. The tiger cave system is not just a collection of hollow rocks; it is a sprawling, interconnected masterpiece of nature located in the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Whether you are a professional explorer or a curious traveler looking for the next big thrill, this system offers some of the most intense and rewarding caving experiences on the planet. From the world’s fourth-largest cave to a sinkhole so deep it could swallow a skyscraper, the journey through this karst topography is a definitive highlight for anyone visiting the Quang Tri province. Geological History and Discovery of the Tiger Cave Network To understand this place, we have to look back at the Tiger Cave system discovery year of 1997. It wasn't found by accident; the British Cave Research Association discovered the tiger cave system with the help of local guides who knew the jungle like the back of their hands. These experts realized that the system includes Pygmy Cave, Dai A, and Over Cave as one continuous geological unit. The area is a limestone karst masterpiece. Over millions of years, water carved through the rock to create these massive voids. Because UNESCO recognizes Phong Nha-Ke Bang as a World Heritage site, the preservation of this history is vital. The tiger cave system is situated in Quang Tri Province (Former is Quang Binh Province), a region known as the "Cave Kingdom" of the world. It’s a biodiversity hotspot where the tropical primeval forest meets the ancient rock of the Annamite Range. If you are looking for a place where time seems to stand still among shimmering stalactites and stalagmites, then Tien Son Cave is your next must-visit destination. Located in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, this natural stone palace serves as a geological relic that is over 400 million years old. Unlike the water-filled caves nearby, this is a dry cave system that invites you to hike up the mountain to see nature's finest sculptures. From the rare combination of limestone and sandstone to the legendary Fairy Mountain myth, every corner of this site tells a story of tectonic activity and erosion. Discover the "Natural Stone Palace": An Overview of Tien Son Cave I believe you will be stunned the moment you step inside this underground karst wonderland. Since its discovery in 1935, Tien Son Cave has been a symbol of natural artistry. I like how the geological significance here isn't just a boring fact; it is a visible history of the Indochina Peninsula. This cave is an extraordinary relic of the Earth's distant past because it has been shaped more than 400 million years ago. The Tien Son Cave status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site component is well-deserved. I find the rare combination of limestone and sandstone to be a geological wonder that is seldom seen elsewhere. Furthermore, the local myth about fairies descending from heaven names the cave Fairy Mountain, adding a layer of magic to the limestone mountains. If you enjoy speleology, you will notice that the tectonic activity formed the cave structure in a way that feels like a marble palace. Navigating the Journey: How to Get to the Cave Entrance Getting to this hidden gem is an adventure in itself. First, I suggest you travel from Dong Hoi

Deep within the core zone of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Hang Va Cave stands as a testament to the raw power of nature. While its famous neighbor, Son Doong, captures global headlines for its size, Hang Va offers a more intimate and technically rewarding experience. This "young" cave system, estimated to be between 2 to 3 million years old, features a landscape that feels like another planet. Visitors often find that the 1.7 kilometers of passage contain the most complex and exceptional formations in the entire region. From the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the hidden depths of the Va Valley, the journey is a masterclass in adventure and geology. Comprehensive Guide to Booking and Joining a Hang Va Cave Expedition I find that the best way to experience this wonder is through a structured 2-day, 1-night expedition. Because the cave is located in a strictly protected area, you cannot just wander in on your own. Oxalis Adventure is the primary operator that manages these tours. I like how they prioritize safety while maintaining the rugged feel of the jungle trekking experience. Before you book, you must assess your physical fitness. The requirement is specific: you should be able to complete a 3km jog in 30 minutes and climb several flights of stairs without gasping for air. During the trip, tourists perform trekking through dense brush and must handle river crossing and rock scrambling. I recommend packing 1-2 long-sleeve, quick-dry hiking shirts and trekking shoes with good grip. Don't forget insect repellent, as the tropical humidity brings out the local bugs. The season open period is January to August, so I suggest checking your calendar early. Comparing Hang Va and Son Doong: Choosing the Right Adventure People often ask me if they should visit Son Doong Cave
