What to Wear in Hoi An: Stylish Outfit Ideas for Every Season

Hoi An is one of those places where you want to look good in every photo but still stay comfy while walking around. I’ve been there several times, and each trip taught me something new about what to wear in Hoi An, from dressing for the heat to choosing the right shoes for cobblestone streets.

This guide will help you plan your wardrobe, whether you’re visiting during the dry season or the rainy season, exploring Hoi An Old Town, or relaxing on An Bang Beach.

Understanding Hoi An’s Weather Before You Pack

Understanding Hoi An’s Weather Before You Pack

Hoi An, located in Central Vietnam, has a tropical monsoon climate with two main seasons – the dry season and the rainy season. Each brings its own charm and influences what you should wear and how you experience the town.

From January to March, the weather is mild and pleasant. The air feels fresh, the sun is soft, and rainfall is minimal. Mornings can be slightly cool, but by midday, it’s warm enough for a relaxed stroll through the lantern-lit streets of the Old Town.

April to May marks the transition into summer. Days are bright, dry, and perfect for exploring or relaxing by the beach. The heat begins to rise, especially in the afternoon, yet evenings often cool down with a gentle breeze.

The months of June to August bring peak summer – hot, humid, and bursting with sunshine. Temperatures can climb above 35°C (95°F), so it’s best to plan sightseeing for early mornings or late afternoons. Still, this is when Hoi An looks its most vibrant, with clear blue skies and golden sunsets over the Thu Bon River.

September and October signal the arrival of the rainy season. Short but heavy showers become frequent, and October sometimes sees flooding in low-lying areas of the Ancient Town. Despite the wet weather, this period gives Hoi An a peaceful, romantic feel with reflections dancing on the wet streets.

From November to December, the air cools down and the rain lingers. Temperatures drop to around 18–20°C (64–68°F), and the sky often stays cloudy. The town takes on a misty, tranquil beauty — a lovely contrast to the bright, busy summer months.

Tip: Always check the weather forecast before packing. Even in the dry season, Hoi An can surprise you with a sudden afternoon shower or brief drizzle. Knowing the forecast helps you pack smart, maybe an extra poncho, a light jacket, or waterproof shoes just in case.

What to Wear in Hoi An During the Dry Season

The dry months (from February to August) are my favorite because the sunlight makes the old yellow buildings glow. For this time, go for breathable clothing like linen or cotton.

For women: I’ve learned that maxi dresses or A-line skirts look effortlessly elegant in Hoi An. The way they flow with the breeze makes every photo special, especially against those warm yellow walls. I like pairing them with a wide-brimmed hat, a straw bag, and comfortable sandals. It’s stylish, breathable, and perfect for wandering the Old Town.

For men: Linen shirts and light shorts are the best combo for staying cool and looking sharp. They’re perfect for cycling or exploring nearby villages. Once, a friend joined me on a trip to Tra Que Vegetable Village, and his light sneakers worked perfectly for both biking and walking back through the lantern-lit streets.

Accessories I never forget: I always bring sunscreen for protection, sunglasses for the bright afternoons, and of course, my favorite – the non la, Vietnam’s conical hat. It’s light, practical, and adds that perfect local touch to every photo.

When the temperature in Hoi An rises, you’ll appreciate these simple yet practical choices. Remember, this city invites slow exploration, so your outfit should let you move easily.

What to Wear in Hoi An During the Rainy Season

The rainy season (from September to December) changes the city’s atmosphere completely – fewer tourists, softer light, and reflections on wet streets. But it also means you’ll need quick-drying outfits.

Here’s my go-to rainy outfit list:

  • Waterproof jacket or light poncho.
  • Slip-resistant shoes (forget flip-flops; they’re too slippery).
  • Quick-dry shorts or skirts.
  • Waterproof bag for your camera and phone.

I once got caught in a sudden downpour while photographing the Japanese Bridge. Luckily, my poncho and waterproof sandals saved me. Don’t underestimate Hoi An’s sudden rains!

If you’re visiting during this season, I highly recommend checking out fun things to do in Hoi An on rainy days, you’ll be surprised how magical the town feels even when it’s pouring.

Travel tip: When it rains, the easiest and most comfortable option is to take a private car. You can book a private transfer from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An with Hura Cars and skip all the hassle of the weather.

Dressing by Time of Day in Hoi An

Dressing by Time of Day in Hoi An

The beauty of Hoi An changes through the day, and so should your outfit.

Morning: Hoi An mornings are cool and peaceful. A white T-shirt with linen pants or shorts is perfect for walking around or visiting cozy coffee shops. I usually wear flat sandals – light and comfortable for wandering the quiet streets.

Afternoon: The heat picks up, so I switch to flowy dresses or loose shirts with a silk scarf. They’re both stylish and breezy, great for sightseeing or relaxing by the river.

Evening: As lanterns start to glow, Hoi An turns magical. I love wearing floral or vintage-style dresses with straw bags and espadrilles, they match the old-town vibe beautifully.

Night: For dinner by the river, I usually choose a long jumpsuit or elegant maxi dress, paired with a small crossbody bag and light jewelry for a simple yet chic look.

What to Wear When Visiting Cultural and Historical Sites

Many attractions in Hoi An, such as temples, assembly halls, and family chapels, require modest clothing.

You should cover your shoulders, chest, and knees. Avoid see-through or tight clothing like jeggings. Footwear, however, is flexible — sandals, flip-flops, or shoes are all fine.

Places with dress code:

If you’re underdressed, many shops sell sarongs and shawls you can use for covering. I once forgot my long pants, so I bought a sarong nearby –  surprisingly comfortable and stylish!

Where to Buy or Rent Clothes in Hoi An

Where to Buy or Rent Clothes in Hoi An

Hoi An isn’t just famous for lanterns and old houses, it’s also one of the best places in Vietnam to shop for tailor-made clothes. This tradition dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when Hoi An was a thriving international trading port. Merchants from China, Japan, and Europe came here to exchange silk, spices, and handmade garments. Over time, the town developed a strong tailoring culture that still thrives today.

When you want to have a nice suit, Ao Dai or tailor-made fashion, go to the tailor shops and you can have custom clothes ready in a day.

Best places to shop:

Once, I ordered a custom linen shirt for less than expected — perfect fit, local fabric, and friendly service.
