The Phong Nha Cave Boat Experience

Of course, we cannot talk about this area without mentioning the giant. Son Doong Cave is located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and it is famously the largest in the world. Son Doong Cave has a discovery year of 1990, but it wasn’t until 2009 that its true scale was revealed. With a volume of 38.5 million m³, it is big enough to fit a 40-story skyscraper inside.
Because of the cost and fitness required, most of us might opt for the Hang En cave or the Tu Lan Cave system instead. These offer a similar Vietnam karst landscape vibe but are much easier on the wallet.

We follow the rugged 5 km trail, and eventually, we reach the Gio Waterfall. This Gio Waterfall has a height of 30 meters, and the sound of the crashing water is a great soundtrack for a picnic.

If we want to cool off, Mooc Spring is the place to be. The Mooc Spring water color is turquoise, looking almost like it has been edited in a photo. We can swim in the limestone-filtered water or grab a kayak. Biodiversity exists in the national park, and while we swim, we might see rare butterflies or hear the calls of monkeys in the canopy.

From September to November, the rainy season hits hard. Heavy rain can close caves entirely. If we visit during the cooler months of December and January, we find the weather is drier, but it can feel chilly inside the caves.
