Hue City and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park are two of the most famous destinations in Central Vietnam, and many travelers combine both on one trip. If you’re stopping in Hue and wondering how to get to Phong Nha next — how long the bus takes, whether Phong Nha has a train station, and so on — Hura Cars breaks down all your options below.

The distance from Hue to Phong Nha is about 210 km. A direct journey takes roughly 3.5–4 hours, or about 6–7 hours if you stop along the way to visit historical sites in Quang Tri province, such as La Vang Holy Land, Hien Luong Bridge – Ben Hai River, and Vinh Moc Tunnels.

Broadly, you have two approaches: travel directly by bus, taxi, motorbike, or private car, or travel by train — take the train from Hue to Dong Hoi, then continue on to Phong Nha by local bus, taxi, or private car. All of these options are reasonably priced, so the main things to weigh are travel time and comfort versus cost.

What is the best way to transfer Hue to Phong Nha?

Means of transportation from Hue to Phong Nha are quite diverse. You can choose between buses, trains, motorbikes, taxis, or private cars. Depending on your priorities, such as time, budget, or flexibility, you can select the most suitable option for your trip.

1. Hue to Phong Nha by bus

Hue to Phong Nha by bus

If you want to save money and don’t need to stop at the DMZ sites in Quang Tri, the bus is the most cost-effective option.

Local bus: You can buy tickets at a ticket office or directly at Hue’s Northern bus station, about 8 km from the city center. The main downside is that staff usually don’t speak English, which can make things trickier if you don’t speak Vietnamese. These buses also only go as far as Dong Hoi, so you’ll still need a local bus, motorbike, taxi, or private car to continue on to Phong Nha — and since schedules aren’t always strict, waiting times can vary.

Open bus / tourist bus: A direct bus from Hue to Phong Nha costs around $10 and takes about 4–4.5 hours. The driver picks you up by shuttle from your hotel if you’re staying in Hue city center, or you can go directly to the bus company’s office. There are two typical departure windows: a seat bus leaving between 7:00–8:00 AM, or a sleeper bus leaving between 4:00–5:00 PM.

How to book: Some tourist bus operators you can book with include Minh Map Bus, Hung Thanh Bus, Camel Bus, Queen Bus, and An Phu Bus. The buses themselves are modern and comfortable, so the 4–5 hour ride shouldn’t feel tiring — you can easily nap along the way.

2. Hue to Phong Nha by train

Good news: a new direct tourist train now connects Hue and the Phong Nha area. Vietnam Railways has announced a heritage-style service called “Ancient Capital Hue – Phong Nha: Journey of Wonders – World Heritage,” expected to launch on September 1, 2026. It runs straight from Hue Station to Thọ Lộc Station — the gateway station for Phong Nha-Ke Bang — so you no longer need to route your trip through a separate transfer at Dong Hoi.

New Hue – Phong Nha tourist train at a glance:

  • Route: Hue – Dong Ha – My Trach – Dong Hoi – Tho Loc (about 190 km, roughly 4 hours)
  • Schedule: Train HQ2 departs Hue at 7:15 AM, arriving at Tho Loc at 11:55 AM. The return train, HQ1, departs Tho Loc at 1:15 PM and arrives back in Hue at 5:25 PM
  • Fares: 420,000–760,000 VND depending on seat class, with promotional pricing running through December 31, 2026
  • Onboard: 8 carriages (304 seats total), including 360-degree rotating soft seats, a VIP carriage, a community carriage, local food showcases, live performances, and digital audio guides
  • From Tho Loc Station to Phong Nha-Ke Bang: about 20 km, so you’ll still need a short taxi or private car transfer to reach Phong Nha town or your accommodation — Hura Cars can arrange this leg for you

Ticket booking channels for this new service haven’t been published yet — we’ll update this post as soon as they’re confirmed.

If you’d rather travel on the standard route today, or your dates fall outside the HQ1/HQ2 schedule, here’s how the regular train option still works:

Regular trains run from Hue to Dong Hoi station, with a total Hue-to-Phong Nha travel time of about 3–5 hours once you include the onward transfer. There are 5 trains on this route — SE2, SE4, SE6, SE8, and SE20 — departing daily and taking about 3.5 hours from Hue to Dong Hoi. Ticket prices range from about $16–$28 depending on seat type and timing.

How to book train tickets:

You can buy tickets at Hue station or reserve online.

Prices are the same whether you book online or in person, but they run higher during peak periods — Lunar New Year, and national holidays such as April 30, May 1, and September 2 — and tickets can sell out, so it’s worth booking about a month ahead for those dates.

As noted, the regular train doesn’t run directly from Hue to Phong Nha — you’ll need to get off at Dong Hoi and continue on by local bus, motorbike, taxi, or private car, since Phong Nha itself has no train station.

  • Local bus: The cheapest option. The ride takes about 90 minutes and costs around 35,000 VND per person, one way — though you may need to wait a while for a bus to arrive.
  • Motorbike: A more adventurous way to cover the Dong Hoi–Phong Nha leg. It takes roughly 1–2 hours, and rental typically costs 100,000–120,000 VND per day — a good fit if you want an independent, flexible pace.
  • Private car: The quickest and most convenient option if you’d rather not deal with transfers. An English-speaking driver picks you up in Dong Hoi and takes you straight to Phong Nha in a modern, fully equipped vehicle with free Wi-Fi. Book a private transfer from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha easily.

4. Hue to Phong Nha by taxi

Taxis are flexible — no advance booking needed, and you can hail one on the street or through a ride-hailing app like Grab. You’re free to choose your own stops along the way.

That said, metered taxis tend to be pricier than a private car for a trip this long, since you’re paying for both distance and any waiting time, and most drivers won’t speak English. If you do book a taxi, it’s safer to do it through an app so you know who’s picking you up.
