Category:

Whether you are a history buff or a nature lover, the Hoa Lu – Trang An – Mua Cave Full Day Tour is one of the most popular ways to see the best of Ninh Binh in a single day. Located just 90km south of Hanoi, this tour perfectly balances ancient Vietnamese culture with the breathtaking “Halong Bay on Land” scenery. By visiting the first capital and navigating the UNESCO-protected waterways, you get a full picture of the region’s soul.

Hoa Lu – Trang An – Mua Cave Full Day Tour Detailed Itinerary

07:30 – 08:00 | Departure from the Capital

Your morning begins with a convenient pickup from your accommodation within the Hanoi Old Quarter. I love the early start because it allows us to escape the city traffic as we head toward the peaceful landscapes of the Red River Delta.

10:30 | Step Back in Time at Hoa Lu

Co Do Hoa Lu

Upon arriving in Ninh Binh, we dive straight into history. Hoa Lu Served as Capital during the 10th century, and it is a fascinating sample of ancient Vietnamese architecture. You will take a brief walk to explore the temples dedicated to King Dinh and King Le. It is a great moment to learn about the Dinh Dynasty and the transition of power that shaped the nation.

11:45 | Regional Buffet Feast

Savour a Traditional Vietnamese Lunch

By midday, we refuel with a Buffet lunch local specialties. I highly recommend trying the goat meat or the crispy fried rice. If you are a vegetarian, do not worry—there are plenty of plant-based options available that are just as delicious.

13:00 | Boat Journey Through Trang An

Boat Journey Through Trang An

In the early afternoon, we head to the Trang An boat tour. Since Trang An belongs to UNESCO, the scenery is world-class. You will spend roughly 2 hours on a sampan boat ride, navigating through a stunning tunnel cave system. We even pass through the famous filming location for “Kong: Skull Island.” I find the emerald water and karst towers to be the most relaxing part of the day.

15:00 | Rural Village Cycling

Rural Village Cycling in Trang An

After the boat ride, we switch gears and hop on bicycles. For about 45 minutes, we pedal through the local countryside. I love this part because it offers a neutral, authentic look at daily life in the village, away from the typical tourist paths.

15:45 | The Ascent to Mua Cave

Conquer the Dragon’s Peak at Mua CaveThis is the physical highlight of the tour. We prepare to Climb Mua Cave, tackling nearly 500 steps to reach the summit of Ngoa Long Mountain. The Peak Located at Mua Cave provides the famous “Dragon’s View” over the Tam Coc valley. It is easily the best photography spot in the province.

17:00 – 19:00 | Return to Hanoi

As the sun begins to set, we board our comfortable shuttle bus for the return leg. You can relax and look through your photos as we arrive back at your hotel in Hanoi by approximately 07:00 PM.

Pro-Traveler Tips: What to Bring

To make the most of your day, we recommend:

  • Proper Footwear: I highly suggest sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes. You’ll need them for the Mua Cave 500 steps trek. I do not like seeing people in flip-flops on the steep Ngoa Long Mountain path as it can be slippery.
  • Sun & Weather Protection: The sampan boat ride in Trang An offers no shade. I like to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen to handle the Red River Delta heat.
  • Camera Gear: Whether it’s a DSLR or a smartphone, you’ll want plenty of storage for the views from the Lying Dragon Mountain. I also think a power bank is a great example of a must-have for long day trips.
  • Insect Spray: During the Cycling in Ninh Binh portion, you’ll be near rice paddies where bugs are common. A quick spray makes the village exploration much more pleasant.
