Tu Duc King

From King Minh Mang to Thieu Tri and then Tu Duc king, there was a development of poetical-ness in the royal family, especially with Tu Duc king. He was worth bearing the title “a great poet” because of his talent, his love for poetry, and his works. Was that a genetic material from grandfather to grandson? Later, His Majesty was criticized that for 36 years sitting on the dragon throne, he did nothing but composing poems:

Nationwide, almost everybody enjoys reading Chinese poems by Li Po and Tu Fu,

And none knows anything happening in foreign countries like England or Russia.

His Majesty is so worried about taking back paddy fields instead of the lost citadels,.

He knows how to compose and recite poems only but that his soldiers are hungry and weak.

Tu Duc king was sensitive and devoted to literature. His works contained an abundant content, showing his knowledge and talent in literature. Some of them were His Majesty’s Writings, Poems of Self-Learning, Ten Commandments, etc…. In fact, under Tu Duc reign, there were quite a few well-known mandarins noted for being good at literature such as Cao Ba Quat, Nguyen Van Sieu, Nguyen Ham Ninh, Nguyen Cong Tru, Tung Thien Vuong, Tuy Ly Vuong, etc… The King was once very proud of his courtiers and praised them as followed:

No one under the dynasty of Former Han could surpass Sieu and Quat in literature.

Also, Tung and Tuy’s poems defeated those under the prosperous dynasty of T’ang.

Though, political affairs were so complicated and confusing under his reign. His Majesty would be absorbed in the pleasure of composing poems after work with his courtiers. There were some funny literary anecdotes relating to this poem loving king. When having free time, Tu Duc king often enjoyed discussing and talking about literature with his courtiers.

Gia Long Tomb – An Imposing, Grand, Magnificent Tomb

The so-called Gia Long Tomb has a complicated history of construction because in fact, it is a complex of tombs which includes not only the tomb of Emperor Gia Long, but also the tombs of other members of royalty. The complex covers a large area in Dinh Mon Village; tombs were added at different times over a period of two centuries (17-19 century).

gia-long-tomb-1After suitable land for the tomb was found, the Emperor frequently visited the area and supervise the construction. He gave the mountainous area the name Thien Tho Son and allotted each of the 42 hills and mountains of different altitudes within the area with an individual name. The Minh Thanh Temple, as well as most of the temple section in the Tomb, was completed in 1815. The work of building the main structures of the Tomb lasted for six years, from 1814 to 1820. Some other structures were completed later.

There is stone steel to the left of the tomb erected on September 18, 1820, which bears an inscription titled ‘The Merits ol the Emperor’ written by Emperor Minh Mang himself on august 10, 1820. The two rows of stone statues of mandarins, horses, and elephants at the Bai Dinh courtyard in front of the Palace, where mandarins stood during a court audience, were not completed until April 1833

gia-long-mausoleumOf the seven royal Tombs, the Gia Long Tomb is the farthest from the Hue Ancient Capital. However, it is the most imposing in terms of the natural landscape. Looking around from the center of the Tomb, a person will easily feel small in the midst of an area of mountains and hills that seem to extend endlessly. The choice of landscape here shows the King’s zeal for embracing the whole country in his arms. It should be mentioned that the King had struggled on the battlefield for a quarter of a century before finally unifying the country and becoming the first emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty.

gia-long-2
The architects of the time managed to impose control over nature and force the surrounding landscape to comply with human intentions by creating architectural structures which were artistic and appropriate, but modest in scale. The whole complex is a skilful blend of architectural design and nature. It has no pavilions, palaces, or ramparts: the surrounding mountains and hills serve as its natural defense. The stone tombs of the Emperor and his wife are the simplest structures and are Positioned parallel and close to each other. However, the close proximity of the two tombs manifests the loyalty and strong attachment between the Emperor and his wife, who together had experienced the vagaries of time and fate during the Emperor’s life as a warrior, making the Gia Long Tomb different to the other royal Tombs in Hue.

gia-long-tomb-2The Gia Long Tomb was the first model for a Tomb in Hue and later used as reference by the following emperors when building their own Tombs. It contributes to expressing the style of an emperor who founded the Nguyen dynasty.

Take part in Hue city tour and visit this mausoleum.

How to get there

There are 2 ways to go to Gia Long Tomb, which is really a remote spot, even for local people.

  • One is travelling by boat along Perfume River, which can be taken at the wharf at Toa Kham boat station. The boat trip is really worth a try, since it provides a unique chance to capture the scenic landscape of upstream Perfume River.
  • The other method is to go 15 km by car. You go to Minh Mang tomb (10 km from city center) and through new bridge, from there, go straight to Gia Long tomb. It takes 5 km.

Visiting Hue Imperial city

Occupying the most important position in the Hue Imperial City, the Palace of Supreme Harmony houses the throne seated by thirteen Emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty from Gia Long to Bao Dai. During Vietnam’s monarchy, the Emperor was considered the greatest lord. The palace was thus once the country’s center.

Hue Imperial citadel was built in 1805. Improvement and large-scale restoration work took place twice in 1833 and 1923. It is almost square in shape, 2,400m in circumference and pierced on each side by an entrance: Noon Gate, Hoa Binh Gate, Hien Nhon Gate and Chuong Duc GateHue city tour 1 day

Hue Imperial City, together with the Esplanade of Great Salutation, was the site for serious festive occasions such as the Coronation Ceremony, Emperor’s Birthday Anniversary Ambassador Interview Ceremony and Grand Meeting held bimonthly on the first and 15th days of the lunar month.

On these occasions, the Emperor sat solemnly on the throne. Only his immediate relatives had access to the palace. Other mandarins lined on the Court according to their ranks and titles from the first to ninth grade, civil mandarins on the left, military mandarins on the right. Their positions were marked by two rows of stone slabs on the Court.

The wooden canopy over the throne is elaborately carved and gilded. Eighty ironwood columns in the palace are lacquered and adorned with dragon and cloud designs symbolizing the rendezvous between the monarch and his subjects. According to Chinese Classics, both the dragon and the number nine symbolize the monarch. This explains the presence of the nine-dragon motif in and outside the palace which is also ornamented with poems in Chinese characters of great literary value.

Tomb of Minh Mang emperor

In 1826, the 7th year of Minh Mang emperor reign, he ordered all the mandarins who were skilled in geomancy to find good land for the construction his tomb. It was only in 1840 that he could select the most satisfactory site and design for Minh Mang emperor as we see today. Mandarin Le Van Duc found the suitable site and was promoted two ranks.
In April 1840, Minh Mang emperor visited the site and gave the mountainous area of Cam Ke the new name of Hieu Son. He then ordered two high- ran emperor mandarins: Truong Dang Que and Bui Cong Huyen, to take a unit of the Royal Engineers to the site to make a survey. They drew a topographical map of the mountains, hills, rivers. and streams. In addition, they also made a full design of the tomb, which included an outer rampart, the Emperor’s tomb, temples, pavilions, halls, monasteries, bridges and artificial lakes. The Emperor was fully satisfied with the layout and design and rewarded them with money and cloth.

temple-of-minh-mangIn September 1840, the Court mobilized 3000 soldiers and building workers to level the ground and build the outer rampart. The two high-ranemperor mandarins Truong Dang Que and Ha Duy Phien took turns supervising the construction. On 20 Jan 1841, the emperor died. He was only 50 years old at the time of his death.

A month later, the construction was resumed by order of Emperor Thieu Tri. The high-ranemperor mandarins Ta Quang Cu, Ha Duy Phien, Nguyen Huu Le, Nguyen Tri Phuong and Ton That Duong were assigned to take charge. The Court mobilized nearly 10000 soldiers and building workers from the Ministries of Military Affairs and Public Works for the construction. Only the soldiers were allowed to take leave, every two months and in turn.

The speed of construction was maintained and the Emperor’s coffin was buried on August 20, 1841. The stone stele “The Merits of the Emperor” was set up on 25 Jan 1842. However, it was not until 1943 that the Minh Mang tomb was completed according to the original design.

The Minh Mang Tomb is a large-scale architectural complex. It encompasses about 40 structures of different sizes in an airy and cool area with mountains, hills, rivers, and lakes. Geomancy Le Van Duc was right to choose is site for the construction of the tomb, since it is not only in conformity with fengshui principles but also in harmony with the surrounding landscape. The entire tomb looks like a human body with the head supported by a high hill, and the four limbs stretching towards a nearby confluence.
The tomb is a complex of great length: the distance from Dai Hong Gate to the farthermost point of the outer rampart is 700 meters. The rampart is high, but it does not restrict the visibility of the outer landscape from the inner tomb. Loo emperor southwards from Huu Bat Bridge, one sees an image like a water-color painting of mountains and trees reflected in Trung Minh Lake.

minh-mang-tombInside the rampart, the architectural structures are arranged systematically on a single axis, and in a strict order. This layout reflects the situation of contemporary society, organized in accordance with the centralist policy of the monarchical regime that fully venerated Confucianism. It also reveals the emperor’s personality and style. The Minh Mang Tomb is built in the round, symbolizing that the Emperor is the sun, or the Supreme Being who has the power to control society.

The architectural structures in the front section of the tomb are broadly spaced. However, as one penetrates to the interior, they become more closely. In this” design, the architects of the time merged three horizontal sections of the Gia Long Tomb into one and arranged them along a single axis. They also cleverly took advantage of the site topography, using the hills to raise the levels of the architectural structures. Simultaneously, they skillfully excavated lakes as the low notes in a piece of music, full of melody and rhythm, creating a balanced composition of architecture and nature inside the tomb. The wooden doors at Hien Duc Gate, Hoang Trach Gate, and Minh Pavilion spring surprises on visitors whenever they are opened. The architecture, landscape, and the elevation of the central axis of the tomb keep changing with each step taken by the visitor.

The natural setting, is exploited and adjusted to provide the background for the architectural structures in the Minh Mang Tomb. This contributes many charming features to the design, along with its outstanding symmetry and solemnity. Masters of architecture nowadays cannot help admiring their predecessors for their excellent skills in plastic arts as revealed in this tomb.

Thieu Tri King – A great poet

Being a great poet and composing quite a few renowned but unpopular poems on the wonderful scenic spots of the ancient capital, Hue, in Chinese characters, Thieu Tri king was very interested in literature and set up an unofficial club of poetry. This club included 18 royal relatives and high-ranking mandarins. On one occasion, while His Majesty went for a walk in the Co Ha Royal Gardens, which was designed by the king himself and built under his reign, he composed 14 poems on a stretch to praise its marvelous scenery.

Thieu Tri tomb
Next, he bade his club members to answer them with their own poems in the same rhyme. They were given paper, ink and pens to fulfill his request on the spot in the garden itself. Both the king and his courtiers were like 18 stars glittering in the sky of the Cu Ha Royal Gardens. Perhaps, Thieu Tri king club of poetry was the premise to enhance the atmosphere of literature and the spirit of poets and poem loving people, which resulted in the foundation of the Mac Van Club of Poetry headed by Lord Tung Thien Vuong and the Huong Binh Club of Poetry by Ung Binh Thuc Da and Thao Am Nguyen Khoa Vy later.
In addition to 14 above-mentioned poems, the king still liberated a great number of poems (8 on the splendid scenery of Thuan An Sea Port, 129 on the stratagem of pacifying Thailand and Champa’s invasions, 12 on the victories over sea pirates, 9 on the King’s teachings, etc…)
Born in 1807 and died in 1847, Thieu Tri King could hardly expect his death at 40, after a seven – year reign. In his dying breath, he had enough time to advise his successor on Thieu Tri Tomb construction.
Monuments in here are in close relation with natural environment. Water of the lakes are conducted by a network of underground tunnels.
As nature loving dis-positing of Thieu Tri king when he was still alive, the tomb harmonizes well with the landscape of which view from the tomb seems almost unobstructed.
